When iconic Canadian restaurant chain Boston Pizza wanted to open a brand new establishment in the heart of Toronto’s Entertainment District that would act as the company’s showcase restaurant for its new urban design concept, franchisee Rob Phillips knew exactly who he was going to hire to see the job through to completion.

“Design Electronics has done every one of my restaurants,” says Phillips, owner of multiple Boston Pizza restaurants throughout Ontario. “I’ve been working with them for 12 years now. We haven’t tendered a contract since our first because of the quality of work they do.”

Based on the project goals and requirements outlined by Phillips and Boston Pizza corporate heads, Design Electronics designed, installed, and programmed a sophisticated system, which consisted of an impressive amount of LED lighting fixtures, nearly 60 HD television screens, a crystal-clear audio system, and a complex Crestron control system featuring custom programmed interfaces and automation that provide an incredible amount of function, accessibility, and ease of use.

Because of their low running cost, low heat output, extremely long life, and vibrant and variable color effects, cutting-edge LED lighting was utilized throughout the 10,000 sq. ft., 360 seat establishment. The LED fixtures provided a rich, natural, ambient light for the bars, seating areas, balcony, stairway, and intimate dining area. in rich, natural ambient light, The lighting system designed by Design Electronics was also variable, which means the entire look, feel, and atmosphere of the restaurant can change with the press of a button.

In addition to a stunning and cost-effective lighting system, Phillips envisioned many HD televisions adoring the walls and hanging from the ceiling. In total, nearly 60 HD television screens between 27 and 55 inches were installed at the restaurant, which means that every guest has a perfect view! Furthermore, Design Electronics provided the custom programming to the video switching, which consists of an intuitive and easy to use wireless tablet interface programmed with Crestron Control. This system allows the wait staff and managers to have complete control of what is being played on individual screens throughout the restaurant.

Matching the project’s visuals is an equally impressive sound system. Design Electronics utilized professional grade components, acoustical treatments, and intelligent room modeling setup and tuning, to provide equality sound to all areas of the restaurant along with the ability to send multiple feeds to specific areas at different volumes.

The customized Crestron Digital Media matrix, which controls the lighting, television, and audio systems, is the backbone of the restaurant’s audiovisual and lighting infrastructure. The Design Electronics team implemented several types of controls for when the staff is asked to change channels, adjust lighting or audio, or cue the pre-programmed chase effects used to highlight special events. Additionally lighting and audio systems automatically dim and rise depending on the time of day.

“The customers come in say its absolutely gorgeous,” remarks Phillips on the completed integration. “It’s not what people are expecting from a Boston Pizza.” Having successfully realized the urban concept design envisioned by Phillips and Boston Pizza Corporate, Design Electronics has set the new standard for this leading restaurant chain’s movement in to a new, modern market.
